• Land Grant: Socorro Founding, 18 Nov 1817, Socorro, Valencia, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España. 16,17 The town of Socorro was settled 18 November 1817, under a grant made by Governor Alberto Maynes to 75 families. The only recorded names are Xavier Garcia and Anselmo Tafoya.
Socorro County, with 6,626 square miles, ranks third in size among the state's counties. A variety of vegetative types are found in the county, such as ponderosa pine and Douglas fir in the west, piñon-juniper in the northwest and east, and mesquite and creosote bush following the Rio Grande Valley.
