This combines two separate Warenne lines. The Warenne Earls of Surrey descend from Hamelin 'Plantagenet', illegitimate son of Geoffrey, by his wife, the heiress of the Warenne line. This line traces back to the first Earl, William, who was a companion of William the Conqueror, and also the father of the Warenne of Wormsgay line. Two more generations can be traced in Normandy. The Whitchurch Warennes appear to descend from a younger contemporary of this first William, named Ranulf, who held Whitchurch at Domesday. He would appear to be ancestor of the above Ranulf, father of William of Whitchurch, from whom both the Whitchurch and Ightfield branches belonged.
