• Background Information. 141 Robert de Swynnerton witness a charter of Hervey Bagot in 1185-90, and in 1199, he was in litigation with a neighbour concerning a stang which he was accused of unlawfully raising in Swinnerton. The same year another claim was made against him for land in Hatton, which was not resolved until 1227. In 1293, he was essoined from attendance at Shropshire assizes, and in 1212, he was a knight ad eligendum for Staffordshire. He married Mabel, and died sometime before 20 Jan 1224/25.

• Background Information. 732 The son and heir of Robert Fitz Aelen, Lord of Synnerton, was the first to style himself de Swynnerton. He evidently took part in the Barons war against King John, since the Sheriff of Linconshire is ordered, Nov 1217, to restore certain lands of Robert de Synnerton, who had returned his allegiance to the King. [Shaw's Staffordshire, vol. i. p. 15] this Robert de Synnerton seems to have died about 1224 because in Jan 1225, Mabel, his widow, is suing her son Robert in banco for her dower. [Staff. Hist. Coll., vol. iii. Old Series, p. 231; vol. iv. p.32] The son Robert died without issue, and was succeded by his sister Margery, who later married her cousin [Staff. Hist. Coll. vol. iii. New Series, p. 76], John de Synnerton of Parva Sugnal, grandson of the Robert of 1190.
