• Background Information. 1216
Richard Basset was in possession of the manor of Letcome Bassett in about 1158. It was held in 1201 by Richard's son, Thurstan, who died about 1222, leaving six daughter as his heirs. One of these, Isabel, married Robert Mauduit, and left a son William, who held the manor in 1231 under a grant from his grandfather.

"Ricardus itaque Basset (filius Turstini filii Radulfi prædicti" revived the claim against the monastery "cum patre mortuo" relating to "terræ de Chedeleswrtha" which was settled [Abingdon Chronicle, Vol. II, pp. 187-9]. The 1176/77 Pipe Roll names "Ricardus Basset et Turstinus filius eius" in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire [Pipe Roll 23 Hen II (1176/77), Buckinghamshire & Bedfordshire, p. 161].
