• Background Information. 1335 Joseph, his wife Elizabeth and son Marke came to New England on a ship called the Hercules of Sandwich.
Joseph Bachelor of Canterbury, Kent, England & Salem, Massachusetts, was a tailor. Also on the ship's list are Henry and John Bachelor who were probably brothers of Joseph. Joseph was of the parish of St. George, Canterbury, and was a bachelor, aged about 24 and upwards, when on 22 Dec 1628, he was granted a licence for his marriage to Elizabeth Dicckenson, of the same parish, virgin, aged about 15, daughter of Susan Dickenson, of the same parish, widow. On this licence he is called Joseph Batcheler. The marriage was to be solemnized at Thanington. The printed "Register Booke of the Parish of St. George," Canterbury, p. 24 contains the record of the baptism of Elizabeth Dickenson, daughter of Robert Dickinson, 10 Apr 1614. The same parish register also shows that John, son of Joseph Bacheler, was buried 1 May 1631 [p. 185], that Mary and Martha, daughter of Joseph Bachelor and Elizabeth Diconson his wife, were baptized 10 Jun 1634 [p. 32] and were buried the same day [p. 185], and that Mark, son of Joseph Bacheler and Elizabeth Dickinson, was baptized 4 Oct 1635 [p. 32]. Joseph Bachelor settled at Salem, then moved to Weham. He died in Jan. 1647/8.
