• Background Information. 579 Samuel Hammond was the oldest son of Benjamin and Mary Hammond. He was born in 1655, and he and his brother John moved to Rochester, Massachusetts when he was about twenty-five. He settled in the extreme southwesterly part of the town which was know as the "West Neck." He died her at a ripe old age and the people of the area gave him much respect. He was one of the founders of the Congression Church in Rochester. He owned large areas of land that he settled his sons on. He bought his land from Hugh Cole, who had purchased it first from King Philip, Sachem of Pokanoket, in 1671. Around the same time that Samuel moved to Rochester, he also married Mary Hathaway.
