It seems as though Pedro Otero is this young Pedro Durán y Chaves. But where did he get his name? As the youngest orphan by a second wife of so a vast a family, broken up by litigations besides, he might have been reared in the household of the pastor of Albuquerque in those times, Fray Cayetano Otero, the only Otero individual in New Mexico up to that time.

Cayetano de Otero was born, c.1701, Galicia, Spain. He professed on January 29, 1725 in Puebla, Mexico as a Franciscan Priest. He was in New Mexico at Zuni by 1731, at Pecos in 1732-33 and in San Felipe Parish in Albuquerque in 1734-35. He apparently remained in Alburqueque until he died after 1768.

• Background Information: 1508
Fray Cayetano was thirty-five years of age when he arrived in the Santa Fé area in 1730, and severed in New Mexico until 1768. While at the Convento de San Francisco de Puebla, 1725, he professed to be aged twenty-four as a hijo de provincia, meaning he was born in Spain but became a Franciscan in New Spain. Cayetano was the son of Francisco de Otero y Lamas and Manuela de la Vega y Montenegro and he was born in Galicia in northern Spain as Francisco Benito Cayetano de Otero. It is very possible that Fry Cayetano is the progenitor of the Otero family in New Mexico by fathering the five children of Quiteria Durán y Chaves. All of these children used both names, Durán y Chaves and Otero, during thei lifetime.

Cayetano had a relationship with Quiteria Durán y Chávez, daughter of Pedro Durán y Chávez and Juana Montoya y Hinojos. (Quiteria Durán y Chávez was born in 1712 in Alburquerque, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva Espańa and died before Oct 1796.)
