• Background Information. 1559
It is believed that donña Eduarda was the daughter of José Mariano de los Dolores Yturrieta and Juana Teresa Romero. There are few records for the children of this couple, possibly because the couple did not marry. Records show that Eduarda Yturrieta was the sister of José Mariano Yturrieta [SANM II, reel 008, Frame 0720-0735] and that José Mariano Yturrieta was the son of Juana Teresa Romero [AASF Isleta Baptisms, 10 Aug 1753, of Joseph Joachin Trujillo]. There is also at least one record that shows that Pedro Yturrieta and Bárbara Yturrieta were children of Juana Teresa Romero. Although there are not records pertaining to the birth of María Luisa Yturrieta, the Spanish census of 1750 records that she was living with Teresa Romero.

Accord to the Spanish Census of 1750, we can gage the birth years by the ages given for the Yturrieta children. José Mariano was born about 1727, Pedro abt. 1732, Bárbara abt. 1739 and María Luisa born abt. 1741. The Baptismal records for Eduarda and Pedro have been found under the name of their step- grandfather, don José Tenorio de Alba y Corona. Eduarda was baptized at Santa Cruz de la Cañada, 17 Oct 1734, as Eduarda Tenorio and of unknown parents and under the care of don José Tenorio. Her padrinos were Juana Teresa Romero's brother, José (Pedro) and their mother, María Montes Vigil [ASSF Santa Cruz de la Cañada Baptisms]. Eduarda's brother, Pedro was baptized, 17 Oct 1732 as Pedro Tenorio, of unknown parents and left in the care of his step- grandfather, don José.

Eduarda, as Luguarda Romero, was part of the Belén Land Grant of 1740, along with her mother, sister, brother, grandmother and stepfather. Everything indicates that Eduarda's step- grandfather, don José Tenorio, played a big part in the raising of Eduarda and her siblings. Within a decade from the land grant, according to the Spanish Census of 1750, Eduarda is living with her first husband, Luis Chaves and infant daughter, María Ysabel, in the sito of Gutierres just south of los Padillas. Shortly after the census was taken, young Luis Durán y Chaves died from an infection to a wound he had suffered while on an Indian campaign.

Eduarda married a second time to Diego de Padilla, the son of Diego de Padilla and María Vásquez Baca. Eduarda had at least ten known children with Diego de Padilla. The children of this union became the ancestors of many Padilla families in New Mexico. Eduarda's daughter from her first marriage, María Xaviera Ysabel Durán y Chaves married José Joaquín Torres and they became the ancestors of many of the Torres families of the Río Abajo. By 1790, Eduarda's name appears on the Spanish census as a widow living at the Plaza of San Andrés de los Padillas along with three of her sons and three daughters. Eduarda was still alive in 1807.

After the death of her first husband & before her marriage to her second husband, doña Eduarda sued the father of her first husband, Nicolás Durán y Chaves. At a time when women lacked social & political rights in the United States and much of Europe, New Mexican women had the right to own land separate from their husbands as well as having the right to pursue lawsuits when they felt they were unjustly treated. Eduarda was barely sixteen years old, a widow and mother of an infant daughter when her first husband died. Don Nicolás Durán y Chaves had promised a dower of 730 pesos that was to be paid with livestock and a choice parcel of land, but after the death of his son, Luis, he did not feel he had to make good on his promise. Despite don Nicolás's standing as pátron, as well as his bribing Eduarda's brother, José Mariano Yturrieta who was helping his sister with her case, on 15 Oct 1751, Governor Veléz Cachupín decided in the favor of Eduarda.
