• Background Information. 252,274 Hernando de Hinojos and his brother Sebastián appear in the 1597 Casco roll of Oñate's forces as natives of Cartaya, Condado de Niebla, the sons of Juan Ruiz. He was thrity-six years old in 1598, and is described as having a good stature and a chestnut beard. Agaian he is mentioned as a native of Cartaya, the son of Juan Ruiz and the brother of Sebastián.
When members of the colony deserted, Hernando was among the Loyalists who stayed in New México. His brother wasn't as lucky, he was killed at Acoma pueblo in 1598.
He is mentioned again as a captain, and then as a Procurator General for the Kingdom of New México when he accompanied the wagon-trains in 1613 and 1617. He was married to Beatriz Pérez de Bustillos, was was mentioned to be his widow by 1632. Two known sons of theirs were Miguel and Juan, and they had a daughter named Gerónima. Gerónima married Francisco de Anaya.
