Juan Ruíz Cáceres was the son of Pedro Ruíz and a native of the Isle of la Palma of the Canary Islands came to New México in 1600. He was thirty years old, and described as having a long face and a full beard. He and Juan Luján were not only from the same place, the Isle of la Palma, but they were very closely related to each other.

Juan was a captain and High Sheriff in 1631. He was very active in political affairs. His wife was Isabel Baca. Juan was closely allied with the Baca family in politics. Decades later he is referfed to as the grandfather of Roque de Madrid, therefore he had a daughter who was married to Francisco de Madrid, father of Roque. His son was most likely Juan Ruíz Cáceres the second, who is mentioned as a soldier escort of 1652.
