• Dates & Events. 252 Francisco de Madrid came to New Mexico in 1603 as a chirrionero de los carros, and brought 10 new soldiers and four friars along with him. In 1626 he boasted that he was one of the "ancient settlers." At this time he is mentioned as the brother-in-law of Pedro Márquez. His wife was María de la Vega Márquez.
By 1639, he was a Captain when he gave his age as forty-six. In 1641, Francisco was a member of the Santa Fé Cabildo, or town council.
His children to all appearances, were: Francisco II, Francisca, wife of Juan Varela de Losada; and María, nicknamed "Mariaca." An Alférez, Cristóbal de Madrid, who escorted some colonists to New Mexico in 1641, might have been another son, or perhaps the elder Francisco was meant since Cristóbal is not heard of again.

• Background Information. 511 Francisco de Madrid was born around 1593, most likely in New Spain. He came to New Mexico when he was about ten years old, in 1603, with a caravan of wagons, four Franciscans and ten soilders. Francisco was married by 1615 to a daughter of Captain Alonso Martín Barba, who was dead by 1626 when Francisco remarried to María de la Vega Márquez.
In the same year Francisco de Madrid was married to María de la Vega Márquez, he was described as a captain and a "vecino antiguo de Santa Fé." In the late 1630s, he served on the cabildo and established a legacy of civic service. In 1639, he was elected as one of the two alcaldes ordinarios, a position that would be held by one of his grandsons.
It is not certain how many children Francisco had , by either or both of his wives. At least three children appear to be his children: Francisco de Madrid II, María de Madrid and Francisca de Madrid, wife of Juan Varela de Losada.
