• Background Information. 1464 According to The Witches of Abiquiu: The Governor, the Priest, the Genizaro Indians, and the Devil, p. 33, the mother of Juana Hurtado and María Hurtado was one of the women of Zia pueblo, where their father, Andrés Hurtado, had an encomienda.
• Background Information. 529 María Hurtado de Salazar may have been the daughter of Andrés Hurtado and a Zuñi Woman (Zia). She was brought to Doña Bernadina Salas y Trujillo by Bernadina's father Diego de Trujillo to be raised by Bernadina. Fray Angelico Chávez suggested that she was the daughter of Bartolóme de Salazar. Brenda Aragón de Chávez, in Aquí Se Comienza, raises the possiblity that María took Beradina's husband's mother surname Trujillo rather than being the daughter of Bartolóme Trujillo's daughter.

María married Manuel Baca Captain, son of Cristóbal Baca and Ana Moreno de Lara Trujillo, about 1678. (Manuel Baca Captain was born in 1659 in Santa Fé, Santa Fé, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España and died in 1727 in Bernalillo, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España.)
