"Lt. Samuel Martin, 1st generation, of New Haven and Wethersfield, CT, was born in Devonshire, England and emigrated from Plymouth to America abt 1640 to 1645. In 1646, Samuel Martin went from Wethersfield to New Haven and married Phebe Bracey, widow of Mr. Bracey by whom she had five children in England (some of whom came to this country).

Phebe was the oldest child and daughter of William Bisby, a gentleman of London, who contributed considerable sums of money for assisting emigration to America. Phebe came to this country in 1642; was at New Haven in 1644. Samuel and Phebe removed to Wethersfield, CT in 1647, at which time Phebe's father, William Bisby, purchased a house and lot "in trust for his daughter, Phebe and his son-in-law, Samuel and heirs" where Phebe lived and probably died. In 1648 they contributed to the expense of seating the meeting house in Wethersfield.

Samuel Martin went to London, England to visit his father-in-law in 1652. It is possible that his son, William Seaborn Martin, was born on board the ship on the voyage back, hence the name William Seaborn. Tradition says it was on their journey to settle in the Americas that this took place, but it is impossible since Phebe was already in the Americas before she married Samuel Martin.

Dates from the Record Books:
1660, delegated to go to "the Bay" and fetch the Rev'd Mr. Cotton to Wethersfield to become pastor of the Wethersfield Church
17 Jan 1675, made a Corporal dragoons, and served in King Phillip's War
19 Dec 1795, at the great fort-fight at the Kingston in Rhode Island, he earned his Lieutenancy and a bound of 200 acres of land
1677, he was granted 50 acres of land for himself and his heirs forever
