The ancient family of Clayton, of Clayton-le-Woods, closed in the direct male line with John Clayton, Esq., who married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Richard Langton of Walton, the Baron of Newton. John Clayton died in 1541, leaving two coheiresses.
