• Background Information. 748 Ela or Isabell was the daughter and only heir of William, Earl of Salisbury. She was under the age of six at the time of her father's death in 1196, at which time she became the Countess of Salisbury. She passed this title onto her husband upon their marriage in 1198. After the death of her husband, William de Longespée in 1226, she administered the revenues of the county, and in 1230/31 or 15 Henry III, she paid a fine of 200 marks to hold for life the custody of the county and the Castle of Sarum. This aggangement was terminated when she became a nun at Lacock on 25 Dec 1238, an abbey she had founded in 1232, and of which she subsequently, 15 Aug 1240 to 5 Apr 1257, was Abbess. She died 24 Aug 1261, and was buried in Lacock Abbey.
