• Background Information. 1067 Sir William de Hebden's father died while he was a minor, so he was brought up in the custody of the Abbot of Fountains. Sir William married Isabel Yelland, the daughter and heiress of Sir Richard de Yelland. They had four children: Richard, Elyecot (or Elizet), Aueray, and Duket. After the death of Sir William, Richard became the lord of Hebden.

• Background Information. 1065 About 1249, William of York, provost of the college, granted Eske manor to his brother Nicholas of York. The estate was later divided among undertenants. By the mid 13th century, part of Eske was in the possession of Peter of Meaux, who then granted six bovates, together with several willeins and their tofts and services to Patrick de Caldebek. Patrick quitclaimed those six bovates to William, son of Nicholas of York, in 1268, and at his death in 1282, William was said to hold them of another William of York, rector of Patrington. In 1286, William's son, also William, assgned four bovates in Eske to his mother Cecily and her second husband, Amand de Durdeval, in exchanged for land elsewhere. The youngest William of York later took the surname Hebden from his manor in West Riding, and as William of Hebden, he had a grant of free warren at Eske in 1316.
