• Background Information. 764 Benedict Gernet was named as Sir Roger Gernet's son and heir in his father Inquisition Post Mortem held on 27 May 1252. Benedict Gernet gave forty marks for his relief, and had livery of his father's estates by a writ dated 20 Jun 1252. [Fine Roll Excerpts, II, p. 133]

• Records and Notes. 1046 A.D. 1253, Indenture of agreement between the abbot and convent of Furness and Benedict Gernet, son and heir of Roger Gernet, of Halton, in the controversy moved between them in the Exchequer, touching the yearly payment of a rent of 26 shillings for 18 acres of land and pasture of 500 sheep in the territory of Halton.

His daughter and heiress married William de Dacre, son and heir of Ranulph de Dacre, Governor of Carlise, 54 Henry III. Halton was the original seat of the Gernets.
