• Background Information. 951 ~A History of Norfolk, p. 27, Eudo de Rye, dapifer, was the son of Hubert de Rye, who saved the Conqueror's life in 1044 from a conspiracy. Eudo was the King's Dapifer, or Steward and Governor of Colchester Castle. His brother, Hubert, was the governor of Norwich Castle, and part founder of the Cathedral.
• Background Information. 782 Eudo Dapifer is the same person as Eudo Fitz Huberts. His father, Hubert de Rie, so called from a place three leagues north of Bayeaux, assisted Duke William against his rebellious Normans at Valognes, and, according to Dugdale, became a great favorite of Duke William. Eudo Dapifer remained in England, after his father and bothers, Ralph, Hubert and Adam, all returned to Normandy. He became the steward of King Williams household.
Eudo Dapifer married Rohaise, daughter of Richard, son of Gilber of Eu. Eudo founded the abbey of St. John, at Colchester in 1096, and was in favor with King William Rufus, having been a great instrument in raising him to the throne.
Eudo died at the castle of Preaux, in Normandy, 28 Feb 1120, and according to his desire, was brought over to England to be buried at St. John's Abbey, which he founded. By his wife, Rohaise, he had an only daughter, Margaret, who married William de mandville, and their son, geoffrey de Mandeville was steward of Normandy, and advanced by King Stephen to the title Earl of Essex.

Eudo married Rohaise de Clare, daughter of Richard de Clare Justiciar of England and Rohese de Giffard. (Rohaise de Clare was born after 1066 and died on 7 Jan 1121.)
