• Background Information. 713 Hamon Massy, the 5th, son and heir to the fourth Hamon, gave the advowson of the church of Bowdon unto the priory of Birkenhead in Wirrall, whereunto Richard Massey, Sheriff of Cheshire, was witness, 1278. Hamon, the fifth, married Alice de Whitney, daughter and heir of Sir Eustace Whitney. Hamon V, 1288, was found to be held of the king in capite, by service of five knights fees.
