Ashton-under-Lyne was part of the manor of Manchester which came into the hands of Robert de Grelle. It was part of the the territory given by William the Conqueror to Roger, the Poitevin, and Roger, gave the manor of Manchester to Robert de Grelle. His son, Albert, gave some of the land to Robert, son of Orme, the Norman, who held it by the same fealty, and the payment of one-penny each year to the Lord of the manor of Manchester.
