• Background Information. 1310 Accord to John G. Hunt, author of "Notes on Families of the Parish of Halifax, Yorkshire Farrer, Deane, Platts, Fairbank, Prescott," American Geneologist, Vol. 40, p. 28:
"Genet Fairbank married James (generation 5) son of Richard (geneartion 4), son of John (3), son of Richard (2) son of John Platts alias Gawkroger of Sowerby. Genet and James had, with others, Abraham Platts alias Gawkroger and James. This Abraham Platts was father of Mary who married in 1629 John Prescott of Sowerby with whom she shortly removed to New England..."

"John Gawkroger b. Sowerby, Yorkshire, England, d. 1505 Sowerby, Halifax Parish. He gave land called 'Platts' to his grandson John in 1487 and then the family was called Gawkroger of Platts; this eventually came to be called just Platts."

• Background Information. 1310,1319 The Ancestry of John Barber White and His Descendants, p. 129 has Richard Gawkroger, brother of John Gawkroger in this position which disagrees with the article in The American Genealogist, Vol. 40, titled "Notes on Families of the Parish of Halifax, Yorkshire Farrer, Deane, Platts, Fairbank, Prescott."
John Gawkroger of Platts, Sowerby, by gift of his grandfather, 1687. His name occurs there from 1465 to 1529. He was Constable from 1481-1484, and paid heriot on his grandfather in 1505. He died before 13 Oct 1533, when his son and heir, John, paid heriot for him. His widow Isabella married as her second husband, John Elywell.
John's brother Richard Gawkrogers-Platts, of Sowerby, has his name appear in records from 1478 to 1544. Richard was Constable on 16 Oct 1520. He dided before 28 Apr 1544, when heriot was paid for him by his son John.
