Drew de Montagu
Information about this person:
• Background Information. 141 Richard's father, Drew, must almost certainly have been a son of the Drew de Montagud. Drew de Montagu, the elder, in 1086, held of the King, Knowle (in Shipton Montagu) and is usually identified with Drew, one of the knights of the Count of Mortain, holding of him a hide of land in his demeane of Bishopstone (ie. Montacute), and the fees of Donyat, Shipton (Montagu), etc., later in possession of this Richard and his heirs. There must have presumably been a Drew de Montagu later in date than the Domesday tenant, from the fact that Drew, son of this Richard, in making his return of fees, 1166, calls himself "young Drew de Montagu." Authorities are not agreed as to whether this family took their name from Montacute in Bishopstone or whether they brought it with them from Normandy.
