• Background Information. 926 Owain ab Howel Da began his rule over South Wales upon the death of his father in 948. Owain married twice. By his first consort, he had two sons, Eionion and Cadwallawn, the last who died in 961. With his second wife, who is given as Angharad, daughter and heiress of Llewely ab Merfy, Prince of Powys, the third son of Roderig the Great, he had tos sons, Mareddu and Llywarch. Llywarch was taken prioner with two thousand tropps, and had his eyes pulled out by Godfrey the son of Harold, in 986. OWain ab Howel Dda died in 987, and was succeeded by his third son, Maredydd.
