• Background Information. 281 William, son of Walter, witnessed deeds of the Gant family in the middle 12th century. He was also a witness to a deed of Robert de Tateshal. In 1166 he was tenant of Simon, Earl of Nottingham, for 6-1/2 knights fees, and he held one-fourth a knight's fee of Hamon Peche. He married a sister of Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincolnshire, daughter of Walter de Gant, by Maud, daughter of Stephen, Count of Brittany. William died before Michaelmas, 1206
