• Background Information. 851 Edgar, "the Peaceful," the fourth Boy King, born in 943 and ascending to the throne in 949. He maintained order with the help of Dunstan as his principal advisor. He had a well-trained army and a strong navy. As his title shows, he lived on good terms with his neighbors. Edgar died 8 Jul 975, after reigning for sixteen years. He was succeeded by his son Edward the Martyr who reigned from 975 to 978, when he was murdered by his father's second (third) wife. This wife was Elfrida, daughter of Ordgar, Earl of Devon and widow of Ethelworld.

• Dates & Events. 470 Reign 959-975. The first King of a united England. He allowed his Danish subjects to retain Danish laws. Edgar promoted a monastic revival and encouraged trade by reforming the currency. He improved defence by organising coastal naval patrols and a system for manning warships. Although he suceeded on 1st October 959, he was not crowned until 973 because St Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, disaproved of his way of life.
