• Background Information. 814 John de Mowbray was summoned to parliament 1 to 14 Edward II as John de Mowbray. He married Aliva, daughter and coheir of William de Braose of Gower, and acquired his wife's inheritance. He joined an insurrection under the earl of Lancaster, and was among those who were taken prisoners at Boroughbridge, and later executed by hanging at York, 15 Edward II. His son and heir was also named John de Mowbray.

• Background Information. 141 John de Mowbray, Lord Mowbray, son and heir of Roger de Mowbray, is said to have been born 4 Sep 1286. He was knighted along with Prince Edward on 22 May 1306. Despite the fact that he was still a minor, he had livery of his father's land on 1 Jun 1286. In this same year he was in service of the King in Scotland, and he was called again for military service many times more from 1308 until 1319.
John was summoned by write to Parliment from 26 Aug 1307 to 15 May 1321. By writ, he was summoned on 18 Jan 1307/8, to attend the King's Coronation which took place on 25 Feb 1307/8. In 1309, he was present at a tournament at Dunstable, and on 10 Jul 1312, he was appointed keeper of the city of York and of the whole county. Later, 2 Aug 1313 and again 9 Jan 1314/5, he was made Warden of the marches towards Carlisle, which allowed him to be excused from Parliament. On 23 March of the same year, he was appointed captain and keeper of Newcastle-on-Tyne and the county of Northumberland. In Aug of that same year, he was directed to stay in the North during the winter campaign.
Sir John Mowbray was among the barons who wrote to the Pope, on Apr 1317, asking him to supoort Edward II against the faction of Lancaster. He was given the custody of the town, borough and later castle of Scarborough on 18 Sep 1317. He was in custody of the castle and manor of Malton on 30 Sep of the same year.
Sir John was in the middle of the disputes with the Despeners, which later led to his downfall for he joined with the Earl of Lancaster in his rebellion against the King. His father-in-law was William de Braose, and William made a conveyance to him of his baronies of Bramber and Gower. Hugh le Despenser, the younger, coveted Gower and prevailed on the King to dispossess Mowbray on the gounds that he did not obtain a king's license. The Lord Marchers contented there was no need of the King's license in the March, and they formed a confederation after the King took Mowbray's baronies. The Despensers were ultimately banished in July 1321.
Sir John Mowbray was with Thomas, Earl of Lancaster when he besieged the King's castle of Tickhll. He was capture by Sir Andrew Harcla on 16 Mar 1321/2 while he was fight for the Earl of Lancaster at Boroughbridge. He was taken to york and hanged on 23 March.
Sir John had married, at Swansea, in 1298, Aline, the daughter and coheir of William de Braose, lord of Brewes, Gower and Bramber in Sussex. After his death, Aline married for a second time to Sir richard de Peshale. Aline died sometime before 20 July 1331.

• Background Information. 599 Sir John de Mowbray, Knight was the second Lord Mowbray, Baron of Axholme, Lincolnshire, Baron of Thinsk, Yorkshire, Keeper of the City of York and the whole county, Warden of the marches towards Carlisle, Captain and keeper of newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumberland, Keeper of Scarborough and Malton Castles, Sheriff of York, and son and heir of Sir Roger Mowbray and Rohese de Clare. He was born 4 Sep or 21 Nov 1286, and married at Swansea, Glamorgan shortly after 29 Nov 1207 to Aline de Brewes (de Braose), daughter and co-heir to Sir William de Broase, Knight, second Lord of Brewes, Baron of Bramber, Sussex, lord of Gower in Wales. She was born about 1289 and was eight years of age when she was married. Aline and John de Mowbray had one son, Sir John, knight and 3rd lord of Mowbray.
Sir John was knighted on the occasion of the knighting of Prince Edward on 22 May 1306. He was summoned to Parliament on 26 Aug 1307 to 15 May 1321. He obtained a grant of markets and fairs at Burton in Lonsdale and Kirby Malzeard, Yorkshire in 1307. He was summoned 18 Jan 1307/08 to attend the King's Coronation on 25 Feb of that year. He was called to do service for the king against the Scots from 1308 to 1319. His father-in-law made a conveyance to him of his baronies of Bramber and Gower in 1318-1320. On the ground that he had entered without the King's license, in 1320, Hugh Despenser, the younger, prevailed upon the king to dispossess Sir John. this proceeding led to a confederation of the Lords Marcher, headed by the Earl of Hereford, the Mortimers and Mowbary against the Despensers. Jan 1321/22, he took part in besieging the King's castle of Tickhill, whereupon orders were issued for the seizure of his lands and his arrest. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Boroughbridge on 16 Mar 1321/22, taken to York to be hung on 23 Mar 1321/22 and his estates were forfeited. He was buried at the Friars Preachers at York and his wife Aline and son John, were imprisoned in the Tower on 26 Feb 1321/22.
