• Background Information. 141 Simon le Scrope, of Flotmanby and Wensley, Yorks, brother of Philip Scrope of Flotmanby and of Barton-on-Humber, Lincs, is named, 1205, as a debtor for 4 li. in an account of the issues of the lands of William de Stuteville, and for 1/2 mark for leave to agree with the daughters of Philip Scrope. By virtue of a fine passed on 8 March 1204/5, confirmed later by a charter, Maud and Alice, daughters of Philip, conveyed to Simon lands in Flotmanby and other neighbouring places in Yorks. As Simon Scrope of Flotmanby he gave land in Flotmanby to Rievaulx Abbey, and in Flotmanby and Folkton to Bridlington Priory.
Simon le Scrope married Ingoliane, and, jointly with her, in or about 1225 executed a charter recording their grant to Henry, their son and heir, of the land in Wensley, Yorks, which they held of Osbert FitzNigel, lord of the vill of Wensley. According to the deposition of Simon, parson of Wensley, taken in 1386, he was buried in the churchyard of Wensley in the ancient fashion, in a stone coffin under a stone inscribed Cy gist Simond Lescrop, without a date.
