• Background Information. 517 Richard Banges was made a freeman as a tanner in the first year of Edward VI. He evidently was not a native of that city, but may have been a the grandson of William Bangs who died at Smallburg, about 12 miles from Norwich, in 1547. the records of that parish give baptism of a Richard Banges, son of Thomas Banges, in 29 Oct 1563.
Richard prospered as a tanner, and by 1569 he was the owner of property in the parish of St. Mary and St. Martins of Coslaney. He and his wife sold this property to Thomas Norforth, Junior, for four-hundred forty pounds. This shows that he was a man of some wealth at the time. He also was called Richard Banges, gentleman and Margaret his wife.
Richard Banges died in 1586, leaving a wife, Margaret and several children. His wife Margaret married the next year, 1587, to John Kinge of Norwich. She died in 1592. Her will proved on 31 Feb 1592 mentions sons Robert and Edmund, daughters Sarah and Elizabeth, Hall, Ixworth, and sons-in-laws Robert Claphamson and Henry Paman. She does not mention John, but he was her son and probably taken care of during his father's life time.
