Nicolás Antonio Chaves and María Bárbara García, Alburquerque, 14 Apr-15 May 1821

Nicolás Antonio Chaves, 24 or 25, single, citizen of the Alburquerque jurisdiction, was the legitimate son of the late José María Chaves and María Ygnacio Jaramillo. María Bárbara García, 16, citizen of the Alburquerque jurisdiction, was the legitimate daughter of the late Antonio José García and María del Carmen Padilla.

Vicar and Ecclesiastical Judge Leyva questioned Nicolás Antonio Chaves who said he had known Bárbara since she was very young, that he was a resident of Atrisco, and that he did not known whether he and his intended were related. María Bárbara testified that she had known Nicolás for four years. She was born in los Padillas in the Ysleta jurisdiction, and at a tender age, her parents gave her to her grandparents to raise. She resided with them in Atrisco.

Witnesses: José Manuel Sedillo, 48, citizen of Ranchos de Atrisco in Alburquerque jurisdiction, married and had known both parties since birth. He state that the couple was related in the third and fouth degrees; José Anastacio Hernández, 62, Alburquerque citizen, and widower; and Victoriano Márquez, 60, married.

On 17 Apr 1821, Father Leyva forwarded the proceedings to Durango. On 15 May 1821, Bishop Castañiza granted dispensation of the basis of angusti loci and assigned as penance that the couple would go to confession one more time than required by the church's precepts, kneel to recite one decade of the rosary every day for two week days, and pay alms of 20 pesos to be disbursed at the bishop's discretion for pious works.

1. 29 Sep 1805, in Ysleta, Fahter José Ygnacio ánchez baptized four-day-old María Bárbara de Altagracia, legitimate daughter of Antonio José García and María del Carmen Padilla. Her paternal grandparents were Tomás García and Juana Chaves; her maternal grandparents were Mariano Padilla and María Antonia Tafoya. Her godparents were Juan Andrés Tafoys and Francisca Fernádez.

2. 28 May 1796, in Alburquerque, Father Guerra baptized three-day-old Nicolás Antonio, the legitimate son of José María Chaves and María Ygnacia Jarmillo. His godparents were Francisco Candelaria and María de la Luz Armijo.
