bullet  Information about this person:

• Background Information. 852
Richard Basset, son and heir of Ralph Basset, succeeded him to the barony of Welden in Northamptonshire. During the life of his father, he seems to have advanced to position where he assisted in the administration of justice in the Aula Regis. This can be seen in the great roll of Henry I that mentioned both he and his father as justices for Norfolk, Suffolk and Surrey. Richard Basset married Matilda, the daughter and heir of Geoffrey Ridel, who was a justiciary as well.

"Henry, king of the English, greet the bishop of Lincoln and Earl David and earl of Leicester and Earl Rannulf of Chester and all the barons and lords of whom Geoffrey Ridel held lands, and all the sheriffs within whose jurisdiction he held them. Know that I have given to Richard Basset the daughter of Geoffrey Ridel to wife, and the custody of Geoffrey Ridel's land until Robert Ridel can be made a knight and marry the granddaughter of Ralph Basset, namely the daughter of one of his daughters. Thereupon the aforesaid Richard shall have 20 librates of land of my fee in demesne, in marriage with his wife, and 4 enfeoffed knights, and if Robert shall die without heir by his wife, I grant to Richard Basset and the heir whom he shall have by the aforesaid Geoffrey, the land of Geoffrey Ridel, of whomsoever he held it. And if the daughters of Geoffrey Ridel shall not be married during the life of Robert their brother, or while under the wardship of Richard Basset, he shall provide for them according to my advice and the advice of Rannulf, earl of Chester, and William, his brother, and Nigel of the earl's chancellor, and Simon, dean of Lincoln, and William, son of Ranulf, and Thomas of St. John and Geoffrey "de Clinton" and Payne, son of John and William of Aubigny and Humphrey "de Bohun" and Robert Musard and Robert Basset and Osmund Basset and Thurstan Basset and William, constable of Earl Rannulf of Chester, and Ralph, the son of Norman, and Hugh Maubanc.
