Richard Fitz Gilbert was the son of Gilbert de Valerie, seen alive in 1011, and was the advocate of St. Valerie, preotector of the monsatery of Fecamp. Gibert Valerie was said to be married to Papia, the illegal daughter of Richard I, Duke of Normandy. ¹⁶⁰
