• Background Information. 567 Richard Flegg was born about 1500, and evidently lived on the homestead with his father until his father died in 1536. In the church warden's accounts of Shipdham he is mentioned in 1546 and in 1543-1546 as a church warden. He does not appear on the subsidy of 15 Henry VIII (1523), since he was living with his father. In the subsidy of 37 Henry VIII (1545), he is listed among the fifty taxpayers in Shipdham. He is again listed in the subsidy of 3 Edward VI among the smaller list of eighteen names in Shipdham.
Richard likely died about 1550 since after that his son who was also named Richard no longer is referred to as Richard, Junior in the rolls of the Manor of Shiphamd that cover the reigh of Mary (1553-1558). Richard, Senior shows up on the subsidy of 1548, yet is absent from those of 1552, which is also indication of his death sometime around 1550. Richard Senior married a woman named Margaret about 1524 who survived him, and was buried as the widow of Richard Flegg in Shipham 10 Oct 1558.
