The great-grandfather of don Gonzalo Rodríguez de Argüelles was don Gonzalo Suárez Argüelles. The elder Gonzalo was living and head of his family during the reign of don Enrique II, Rey de Castilla y León in 1390-1406 [Alonso Cabeza, Paginas de la história el Consjo de Siero, 99]. The son of Gonzalo Suárez Argüelles was Suero González de Argüelles, who wasnoted as a "very powerful knight" who served don Juan I, Reyes de Castilla y León from 1379 to 1390 [ibid]. Suero González de Argüelles was appointed by don Juan I as the alcalde mayor of Asturias, a post he also held under Enrique II in 1394 [Ibid]. Suero's son, don Rodrigo Suárez de Argüelles, was the father of don Gonzalo Rodríguez de Argüelles, Señor de la Casa de Argüuelles in Oviedo.
