• Background Information. 247 Francisco Mascareñas, as a soldier, left New Mexico and resided with his wife somewhere in Nueva Vizcaya for fourteen years. They were back in Santa Fe by Aug 1732 where he was a soldier at the presido. They eventually made there home in Santa Cruz as shown by the Spanish Census of 1750 that lists Francisco, his wife and six children.
