• Background Information. 252 Agustín Griego was the son of a seventeenth-century Captain Agustín (?) Griego and Francisca Montoya, both living at the Presidio of San José when the young Agustín, 22, married Josefa Durán, 19, on Nov. 6, 1682 (DM, 1682, no. 10). Of their known children, Lorenzo married Sebastiana Serna on May 5, 1715 (DM, 1715, no. 14), by whom he had a son, Francisco Xavier, Nov. 10, 1721, and next he married Casilda Jaramillo, widow, on April 24, 1728 (DM, 1728, no. 8). Another son of Agustín and Josefa Durán was José, who married Ana María Ortiz on July 17, 1718 (DM, 1718, no. 17). Josefa Durán had been living in concubinage with the famed Roque de Madrid for 23 years, and had two grown sons by him, when she was tried in 1700. Her husband Agustín was dead by this time, and she actually married Madrid 15 years later. The Ana Griego Montoya, who was the wife of Pedro Hidalgo, was in all likelihood a sister of Agustín Griego.
