Noted events in his life were:
• Background Information. 252 Juan Olguín (Holguín), Captain, was the sole survivor of the once prominent López Holguín family to return to New Mexico with his family; other Olguíns remained at Guadalupe del Paso. The son of Salvador Olguín and Magdalena Fresqui, both deceased, he had lost his first wife, María Luján, at Guadalupe del Paso in 1693. In 1695 he married Juana Martín de Salazar, widow of Francisco de Apodaca, in Santa Fe. He belonged to the Confraternity of La Conquistadora. Juan had taken part in Vargas' Expedition of 1692; when he rescued two captive nieces, the daughters of José (de Leyva) Nevares. While Alcalde Mayor of San Juan de Jémez, he was killed during the uprising of 1696, as also a son of his, name not given, at San Diego de Jémez. Two Spanish women and another youth also perished; but, according to the testimony of a captured Indian, the two women and two youths were made captives instead.
Two of Juan's sons by his first wife were Salvador and Antonio.
