• Background Information. 1297 Robert Bardolf, son and heir of Hugh Bardolf and his wife Cecily, had five sisters. The eldest sister Odoyna, was married Sir Henry de Grey of whom was born Sir Richard de Grey. The second sister married Sir Hugh de Poyns. The third sister married Sir Richard Foliot. The fourth sister was married to Sir Ralph Paynal. The fifth sister called Maud Bardolph was expoused to Sir Robert le Fizpayn, by whom she had one son, Robert le Lou, and one daughter Isabele.
Maud Bardolf had Carlton for her portion of her inheritance from her brother Robert, but the whole of it. Odoyna, the eldest sister had a part, for her portion of the Barony; which part she gave to Sir John Grey, her son.
Maud's son Robert le Lou had a daughter named Joan who married Sir John Spenser, which Sir John had by her a son or a daughter, that died, so that after the death of Robert's daughter Joan, this Sir John le Despenser held the manor of Castle Carlton by the courtesy of England.
Maud's daughter Isabell was married to Sir Hugh de Meryet, who had by her Nicholas Meryet. Of Nicholas came John de Meryet, of John came John, and of John came the third John, the ward of Sir Adam de Welles.
