For anyone interested in New Mexican Hispanic Genealogy needs to have a copy of Fray Angélico Chávez's Origins of New Mexico Families - A Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period. Fray Angélico Chávez used information taken from a variety of manuscripts, books and periodicals to present generations of New Mexican ancestors. His work in New Mexican genealogy has been a blessing for all of us with roots here in New Mexico. I recommend that if you do not have a copy, that you obtain one from either the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center or Amazon.com.

I also recommend Rick Hendricks's and John B. Colligan's New Mexico Prenuptial Investigations From the Archivos Históricos del Arzobispado de Durango, Vol. I and Vol. II, published consecutively, in 1996 & 2001. Both books can be purchased from the Río Grande Historical Collections/New Mexico State University Library, Dept. 3475, P.O. Box 30006, Las Cruces, NM, 88003-3006.

One of the sources Chávez used in his Origins of New Mexico Families - A Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period were Diligencias Matrimoniales, or Pre-Nuptial Investigations of the Archdiocese of Santa Fé. He had typed the records of Diligencias Matrimonials, which are kept at the University of New Mexico. There is a copy of these called New Mexico Roots, LTD. at the Special Collects Library in Alburquerque, and I have spent hours looking through the eleven volumes of pages. Each page is a photocopy of the page typed by Chávez with his corrections and mistakes intact.

I have copied pages, and even entire sections of surnames, such as Armijo, in the hope these will help me in my research. I've been trying in vain to find the ancestors of Salvador Armijo who married Francisca Torres. My father shared with me the oral history of my family, and almost all of this history has been proven true in my research. He told me that we were related to the brother of Governor Manuel Armijo. The only Armijo's I've been able to find were my GG grandmother (Maria) Cencíon Armijo who was the daughter of José Armijo and Juana Silva. Cencíon's grandparents were Salvador Armijo and Francisca Torres.

The name's Salvador and Manuel are very common among people with the Armijo surname, so I've hit a brick wall with my Armijo line. I've added as many connections to Armijo family members as I could find in the NM Marriage and Baptism sources as I could. Although I'm not sure if this is a "no, no" or if it far use, I've scanned the Armijo section to share with my Armijo & Baca cousins. If anyone can help me break my Armijo brick wall, please email me, and I hope these DMS will help my New Mexican cousins online.
