William was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Normandy. He was given the British crown, Christmas Day 1066, after the Normans defeated English forces and his brother-in-law, King Harold of England, at the Battle of Hastings.

William died when his horse threw him violently into the saddle's iron prommel. The saddle burst his intestines and peritonitis quickly set in. It took him five weeks to die.
