Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands, Charles I King of the Franks was the son of Pepin "le Bref" King of the Franks and his wife Bertrada "au Grand Pied." "He is named first son of King Pépin and Bertrada in the Cartulaire of Saint-Bertin [Saint-Bertin, p. 56]." Charles married, as his second wife, Hildegard, daughter of Gerold Graf im Kraichgau and his wife Imma. The couple had nine children. "Thegan's Vita Hludowici Imperatoris names her "Hildigardam quć erat de cognatione Gotefridi ducis Alamannorum" and specifies that she was the daughter of Imma [77]. The Annales Laurissenses record the death "783 pridie Kal Mai" of "Hildegardis regina" and her burial "iuxta urbem Mettensem in basilica apostolorum et beati Arnulfi" [78]." As his third wife, Charlemagne married Fastrada, daughter of Radulf Graf. They had two children. Charlemagne married a fourthtime to a woman named Liutgard. Charlemagne married Hildegrade of Swabia, daughter of Gerold of Swabia Count of Linzgau & Prefect of Bavaria and Emma of Alemania, in 771.528 (Hildegrade of Swabia was born about 758 in Aachen, Rheinland,530 died on 30 Apr 783 in Thionville, Moselle 530 and was buried in Abbaye de St. Arnoul, Metz, Austrasia.)
