Lothaire was the son of Emperor LouisI "der Fromme/le Pieux" and his first wife Ermenguard. His father sent him to govern Bavaria in 814. He was crowned joint Emperor in 817 to rule jointly with his father. His wife was Ermengarde, daughter of Hugues comté de Toursand his wife Ava.


Lothaire married Emgarde de Tours, daughter of Hugues comté de Tours and Unknown, on 18 Oct 821.160 (Emgarde de Tours died on 20 Mar 851 and was buried in Kloster Erstein.)
