Marie was the youngest daughter of King Stephen of England and his wife, Matilda I, Countess of Boulogne. She became a nun and was elected Abbess of Romsey in 1155. In 1160, Matthew of Alsace abducted Marie from the abbey, and forced her to marry him in defiance of her religious vows. From this marriage, Marie gave birth to two daughter, Ida and Mathilde. Marie's maggage to Matthew was annulled in 1170, the same year that Mathilde was born. Following the annulment, Marie returned the abbey where she died 25 Jul 1182 at the age of 46.

Marie married Matthew de Alsace, son of Thierry de Lorraine comté de Flandres and Sibylla Comtesse d’Anjou.160 (Matthew de Alsace was born circa 1137 in Alsace, France and died on 25 Jul 1173 in Battle at Driencourt, Somme, Picardy, France.)
