• Background Information. 141
Sir Walter de Faucomberge, of Rise and Withernwick in Holderness, son and heir of Sir Piers de Faucomberge, of the same (living Apr. 1230), by his 1st wife, Margaret daughter of Richard de Muntfichet, of Stansted, Essex. He was on the King's service in Gascony with the Earl of Leicester in Apr. 1254. Having forfeited his estates in that Earl's rebellion, they were given to Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale, and he had to redeem them in 1268 for £250.

Sir Walter de Faucomberge was summoned for Military Service from 17 Jan. (1257/8) 42 Hen. III to 7 Nov. (1302) 30 Edw. I, to Military Councils, 14 June (1287) 15 Edw. I and 16 Sep. (1297) 25 Edw. I, to attend the King at Shrewsbury, 28 June (1283) 11 Edw. I, to attend the King wherever he might be, 8 June (1294) 22 Edw. I, to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 Jan. (1296/7) 25 Edw. I, and to Parl. from 24 June (1295) 23 Edw. I to 13 Sep. (1302) 30 Edw. I, by writs directed Walter de Faucomberge, Faucumberge, Fauconberge, or Faucunberge, whereby he is held to have become Lord Faucomberge. As Walterus dominus de Faucomberge he took part in the Barons' Letter to the Pope, 12 Feb. 1300/1.

Sir Walter de Faucomberge married Agnes, sister and coheir of Sir Piers de Brus III, of Skelton and Danby in Cleveland (who d. 18 Sep. 1272), and 1st daughter of Sir Piers de Brus II, of Skelton and Danby, by Hawise, sister and in her issue coheir of Sir William de Lancastre, Lord of Kendal (who d. 29 Nov. 1246), and elder daughter of Sir Gilbert fitz Roger fitz Reinfrid, Lord of Kendal.

On 14 Dec. 1272 the King took Sir Walter de Faucomberge's fealty, and he and his wife had livery of her purparty of her brother's lands, viz. of the castle, park, and forest of Skelton, the manors of Marske, Eastburn, &c., co. York, a moiety of the bailiwick of the wapentake of Langbaurgh, and a moiety of the advowson of Guisborough Priory. On 25 May 1280 he (alone) had a grant, to him and his heirs, of free warren in his demesne lands in Skelton, Marske, Eastburn, &c., from which it appears that his wife was then deceased. She was buried with her ancestors in Guisborough Priory, On 13 Nov. 1281 he had livery of the knights' fees pertaining to her purparty of her brothers' lands. He died about midnight, 1-2 Nov. 1304, at Rise, and was buried in the Priory of Nunkeeling

• Background Information. 1356
In 1066 Knut held 6 carucates comprising Catfoss manor. The estate evidently passed to William Malet, who was deprived circa 1070. By 1086 it was held by Drew de Bevrère's man Franco, ancestor of the Fauconbergs, [V.C.H. Yorks. ii. 167, 267, 295] and in the 1280s Walter de Fauconberg, later Lord Fauconberg, was recorded as the undertenant. Catfoss had evidently been granted to a cadet of the family before 1295, when William de Fauconberg was found to have held by knight service of Walter de Fauconberg 4 carucates and 3 bovates in demesne and 1 carucate and 7 bovates more occupied by his tenants.
