• Background Information. 1040
Nicholas II Malmains
and his wife Agnes fined with Ralph de la Haye and Isabel his wife concerning land in Pevensey in 1252 [Fee of Fines, Sussex, 7:4 no. 523]. Isabel was the daughter of Agnes and her first husband William Montague. In 1249, Agnes was already married to Nicholas Malmains when she gave land of her inheritance in Hertfield, Sussex, and the adjoing Cuden, Kent, to the Prior of Michelham to remain to Agnes and Nicholas for their lives. Hamo, son of Hamo de Valoynes put in his claim [Sussex Feet of Fines, 2:137, no. 506]. This seems to be the only clue to a family connection for Agnes.
