Carl Boyer's, Medieval English Ancestors of Certain American's using [Sander's English Baronies, p. 131], p.26, Roger Bertram, Baron of Mitford, was of record in 1172, and died before Michaelmas in 1777 [Sanders, 131]. He married Ada de Morville, daughter of Hugh de Morville, constable to David King of Scots, and founder of Dryburgh Abbey. Between 1149 and 1152, he confirmed the gift made by his grandfather "Wido de Baillio" of the church of Stainton to St. Mary's Abbey at York. Two of his children were William II, d. circa 1199; married Alicia de Umframvill and Hugh. 722

Roger II Bertram was the son and heir of William II Bertram by Alice, sister of Robert d'Umfraville, who gave her Great Babington in free marriage. William II was the son and heir of Roger I by Ada, his wife. Roger I was the son and heir of William I, founder of Brinkburn priory by Hawise, daughter of Guy Balliol, who gave her Stainton in free marriage.
