Sir John de Rochford was younger son of Saier de Rochford, Knt., of Fenn (in Boston), Lincolnshire, Sheriff and Escheator of Lincolnshire, Knight of the Shire for Lincolnshire, Keeper of the King of France at Somerton Castle, Lincolnshire, by his 2nd wife, Joan, daughter of Roger Hillary, Knt., Chief Justice of the Commons Pleas. He married before 1381-2 (date of fine) Alice Hastings, daughter of Hugh de Hastings, Knt., of Elsing, Brisley and Grimston, Norfolk, by Margaret (or Margery), daughter of Adam de Everingham, Knt., 2nd Lord Everingham.

Sir Saier de Rochford was a commissioner of sewers and seabanks in Lincolnshire, 16 Edward III (1342), and was an eminent soldier in the wars with France. In the 33 year of Edward III, he undertook to keep safely the King of France, then a prisoner in England, at Somerton Castle in Lincolnshire, and was to be allowed two shillings per day. Sir Saier de Rochford was high sheriff of Lincolnshire 1349 to 1355. He was one of the followers of Roger de Mortimer, but escaped punishment. He was again a subject of royal clemency in 1322, being pardoned for having adhered to the Earl of Lancaster, and the barons upon paying a fine of 200 marks.
