The family of Mortein were the successours to Warner in Nottinghamshire, of wich Robert Mortein lived in King Henry the First's time. He was followed by his son Adam Moretonio who in, anno 22 Henry II gave account of xxx marks of the amercement of the Foreft. He was followed by son, Eustachius de Moretoin who gave Henry, son of William Hamely of Wellaton, his Villain, with all his sequel and Cattel, to the Priory of Lenton.

the foundation of Lenton priory Robert de Moretuein and his heirs gave 10s. of rent, or 10 solidated of land [Mon. Anglicl v. 11b]. In 1176, Adam de Moretonio accounted in the counties of Nottingham and Derby for 30 marks for forest trespass [Pipe R. 22 Hen. II. 94]. In 1179, Adam Moretania and 2 others viewed the expenditure of £126 on the work done at Nottingham and clipston. [Pipe R. 25 Hen. II. 80] Adam son of Adam Moreton confirmed the alms given by his father Adam and grandfather Robert to Lenton priory, viz. 16s. rent for Algarthorpe. [Harl. MS. 362 f. 21] In 1186 the sheriff of Nottingham accounted for 70s. 11d. of the farm of the land of Adam de Moretoing, [Pipe R. 32 Hen. II. 108] and in 1186 for £7 7s. 10d. From that time until the disturbance of 1194, the honor of Peverel was in the hand of John count of Mortain. [Pipe R. 33 Hen. II, 172]

"In 1194, Eustace de Mortain fined by 20 marks, as one of the knights of John count of Mortain, for having the king's good will. [Pipe R. 6 Ric. I, m.6.] He was a brother of Adam, and like him confirmed to Lenton the 16s. rent given to Lenton by his grandfather Robert and father Adam. [Harl. MS. 362. F. 21] In 1197, Eustace owed 100s. for scutage of 3 fees of the honor of Perverel and for not serving beyond seas in the third army; [Pipe R. 9 Ric. I, m.10d.] and in 1201, he gave 15 marks to escape service overseas in respect of 3 fees which he held of the honor of Peverel of Notthingham. [R. de Oblat. 179] In 1212, he held these 3 fees, name in Eyam, Derbys., 1 fee; in Wollaton and Cossall, Notts., 1 fee; and in Tilsworth, Beds., 1 fee. [Red Bk. 484]
