• Background Information. 183
Ralph le Boteler married Matilda (Maud or Margaret) Pantulf sometime before 1243. In 1246, when 5 fees of Wem are marked as quit of the scutage of Gannok, the person acquiited was "Ralph le Buteiler who has William Pantulf's heir to wife." A suit, on 3 Nov 1253, was heard at Westminster [Placita Michaelmas Term, 37 Hen III, m. 32 dorso] which read "Ralph le Butiler and Matilda his wife sued William del Atre for 7 acres of bosc in Wemme, as the right of Matilda, whereof Hugh de Pantun, Matilda's grandfather, was once siezed. From Hugh the right descended to William, and from William to Elizabeth and Matilda. Elizabeth died without an heir."

After Matilda's husband, Ralph le Boteler died, Matilda married for a second time to Walter de Hopton, a person of some eminences in the Law. The Assizes of 1292 show that Walter de Hopton was still living, but it appears that Matilda Pantulf died sometimes before that. Wem was inherited by Wlliam le Botyler, the eldes son of Matilda Pantulf and Ralph le Botyler.
