William Mauduith [Bank's Extinct Peerage, Vol. III, pg. 717n] at the time of the general survey held several lordships in Hampshire. He married Maud, heiress of Michael de Hanslape. At the time of their marriage, King Henry I granted the barony to William Mauduit as well as the office of Chamberlain to the King in his exchequer and all lands belonging there to, particurlaryly the honor and castle of Porchester.

The house of Mauduit came from Normandy where it flourished before the Conquest of England by William. William Mauduit came over with the Conqueror, and was given seven lorships in Hamphire at the time of the Domesday survey. This William was either the father of William who married Maud de Hanslape or the same person who married Maud. William and his wife Maude left two sone, Robert and William.

Robert Mauduit succeeded his father in all his lands and lordships, as well as the office of chamberlain. Robert was appointed to accompany King Henry's children to France, and he was drowned on his passage from Barfleus into England, along with Henry's children.
