• Family Background. 827
Two ploughlands of the manor of Wiswell were given to Henry de Blackburne, on being in demesne and the other in service from William d'Arches. Henry de Blackburne also received an oxgang of land in Wolvetscholes.

Adam de Blackburne was the next possessor of the lordship of this manor in around 1242. Adam may have been the son or grandson of Henry de Blackburne. Adam's daughter may have been a woman named Beatrix who married Richard, son of John de Pontchardon, and had lands in Wiswell and elsewhere.

John de Blackburne was the next in line to the lordship of the manor. John's son was Adam, who was in possession in 1278, at which time he complained that Beatrix and others disseised him of common of pasture in Wiswell, by the raising of two cottages. Other sons of John de Blackburn were Robert, Henry and Richard Blackburn.

Adam, son of John de Blackburne and brother of Robert, Henry and Richard, acquired some minor holdings in the township. Adam died before 1292 leaving a son named John and a wife named Alice who married Adam de Pemberton.

John de Blackburne, son of Adam and Alice, married Margaret sister of Sir Robert de Holland and by her left three daughters who became co-heirs of his manors. These three daughters were Alice wife of Robert de Shireburne, Agnes wife of Sir Henry de Lea and then of Robert de Horncliff, and Joan wife of Thomas (or Robert) de Arderne, and then of William Touchet.
